When I accepted a job offer with Business Insider back in May, I knew work wasn’t going to be what I expected. While I was grateful to have a wonderful job lined up for me, I caught myself longing to get caught up in the morning commute with hoards of people on the subway and dodging crowds on the sidewalks of New York.

Instead, I would be waking up in my childhood bedroom, hopping in the shower, and waving bye to my parents (who still went in to work) as I promptly sat back down at my dining room table.

I learned a lot about myself and remote work in that process, especially when the rules weren’t laid out for me from the get go. I had a lot of freedom, limitless autonomy, and more than enough time. I know hindsight is 20/20, but here are five things I wish I had done differently when balancing a full-time job with a side gig to get the most out of the experience.
