The pandemic year coincided with the 30th anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act. While many disability groups have seen improvement in employment rates since it became law, people with I/DD remain at a whopping 21% unemployment rate. Since the onset of Covid-19, that number has only increased. One of the biggest challenges facing the I/DD community is prejudice in the workplace. There are myths about people with disabilities that permeate our culture, “Ableism” being the most prevalent. A belief that people with I/DD can’t do much. That their accommodations will be difficult and costly, and that they are taking a job away from an able-bodied person and would reduce profits. But this just isn’t true.
