Creating a diverse and inclusive work environment is one of the most talked-about subjects in the current business environment. But, with teams in different locations and multiple stakeholders spread across various business units, where do you begin? Focusing on building a climate of empathy and compassion. The first step in this process is searching out commonalities among teammates.

Searching out commonalities among teams will make for a more effective team. But to be able to do this, we must embrace our unique interests. There are many parallels that I could draw between our numbers and technology-driven business landscape and the ever-evolving disciplines of the art world or the competitive sports world. For example, I could examine how different genres of music mirror business verticals. Or discuss how specific techniques used in the creation of a painting can be applied to various sales operations. Although I will be writing about some of these topics in subsequent articles, I will use as an example from the lessons I have gleaned from the life of Vincent Van Gogh.
