A recent article in the Wall Street Journal reported that as of January 2022, nearly a third of all job seekers were over the age of 50. So why is it that when employers are desperate for workers, they’re skipping one of the hardest working generations actively looking for work?

…It could be because of their age. Unfortunately, ageism is real.

Even though age is a protected class, no one is talking about it. Most DEI strategies focus on ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation, and rarely, if at all, include age. But the ugly truth? In 2020, 78% of older workers, aged 40-65, reported age discrimination in the workplace.

Even though age-specific language is prohibited by the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), signs of age discrimination include job descriptions that read: “digital native,” “recent college graduate,” or “ideal for people over 50.” But there are things older workers can do to get themselves into the running against their younger competitors.
