The Covid-19 pandemic has permanently changed the way people work. This change has created a powerful tension between executives and workers. While executives want workers to commute to the office five days a week, workers do not see the point.
Why do executives want workers in the office? I see several possible reasons:
- Need to control workers. Unless executives can see them, they believe employees will shirk their responsibilities;
- Urge to develop talent and spread the culture. it is impossible to train workers and reinforce the culture unless workers are in physical proximity to others;
- Pressure from local government leaders. Government leaders are pressuring executives to force workers to commute to support the local economy; and
- Dislike paying for unused space. Executives are paying long-term leases for office space and want to get their money’s worth.
Workers see things differently. Unless executives can replace them with AI-powered chat bots, they should heed these four reasons that workers want hybrid work.
