Instacart, the on-demand, grocery-delivery company, was a big beneficiary of the Covid-19 pandemic. A combination of being ordered to stay at home, coupled with peoples’ fear of catching the virus by venturing outside to shop for food, served as a big score for Instacart. The company solved this dilemma by offering independent contractors to shop for and deliver groceries to people who could remain safely indoors.
The Covid-19 pandemic saw the rise of a new type of worker—the “essential heroes.” These workers are the ones who stock the shelves at Amazon, shop for our food in supermarkets, deliver packages, drive Ubers, take care of elderly residents at nursing homes and engage in an array of other gig-economy and lower-wage work. Their jobs placed them in situations, which significantly increased their health risks.
