If you’re a gig worker — whether or not you’re currently receiving unemployment benefits because of the coronavirus — the IRS wants to remind you about your responsibility when it comes to paying taxes.
The federal government taxes unemployment benefits, and that’s a problem for those receiving benefits in New Jersey. While workers have been able to tell the Department of Labor to take taxes out of their regular benefits, no taxes have been withheld from the $600 benefit that runs through July.
It’s something workers should remember so they’re not socked with an unexpected tax bill when they file their 2020 returns.
