The ability to think long term is becoming increasingly valued – both on an organisational and individual level – as a way to meet emerging challenges and reap the benefits of future opportunities. Few know the importance of thinking ahead as well as Sophie Howe. Following her term as Wales’s first future generations commissioner, she now runs a management and environmental, social and governance consultancy, Sophie Howe Associates, that is on a mission to transform how organisations strategise for future success. 

“The biggest challenge for organisations and the people within them is finding the headspace to think long term,” Howe says. “It’s a self-perpetuating cycle because many of the challenges that have created the polycrisis we’re currently in are because of a lack of long-term thinking.”
