Former workers at a luxury apartment building protested Monday after their employer fired them and seemed to blame their vote to unionize.

Around a dozen union workers at Jersey City luxury apartment building The Beacon protested in front of the building, holding a sign that read “WE ARE ESSENTIAL NOT EXPENDABLE.”

“They could have put us to work in any other of the buildings that they are contracted with,” Juan Perez, who was laid off his job as a porter at The Beacon, said through an interpreter. “We have families to take care of, we have bills to pay, and I hope they think about that.”
