As New Yorkers are turning to gig work to make ends meet, they are earning less than they were two years ago.

The number of gig workers in New York City more than doubled in the last two years, according to data analyzed by Agents Only, an online gig platform. But average earnings dropped by 36% in the past two years, to $13,649 a year from $21,391.

And it’s not just New Yorkers that are trading in — or supplementing — their 9-to-5: More and more people across the U.S. are taking on gig work. The population of gig workers more than quadrupled in the 250 largest cities across the country — driven by the rise in food and grocery delivery during the pandemic, Agents Only found.

Gig work, which captures all types of independent work, from online platforms, contract, on-call, and temporary workers gives people more control over how much they work — and how much they make.
