Michigan has experienced the largest increase in its unemployment rate of the 50 states over the last year and currently has one of the worst jobless percentages in the nation, according to data released Friday by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The national numbers, reported Friday, and state-level figures, revealed Thursday, showed Michigan’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate inched higher, going from 5.3% in January to 5.4% in February. However, since February 2024, the upward trend has been steeper, rising from 4.0% to 5.4%, a 1.4-percentage-point jump, the largest increase in the country, according to the federal bureau’s tracking.
On Friday, experts connected Michigan’s unemployment drift to long-term trends facing the state and concerns over the impact of increased tariffs imposed by the federal government.
