Genius is rarely understood in its time. The best ideas are often shot down at the outset, only to outlast their naysayers and eventually prove what their inventors knew all along: This is how we change the world. The age-old tension between inventors in the vanguard and critics focused on the past has been recognized by market leaders time and again, perhaps most famously in the Apple “Think Different” advertisements. These ads, which began running in 1997, highlighted creative minds who followed their instincts and ended up changing the world. Of these changemakers, the voiceover in the television ad emphasized, “About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them.”
But how do you bridge the gaps while making big technology leaps? Maybe it isn’t just about “thinking differently,” but it’s also about making the right transition. Recent “hybrid” technologies like cars and now hybrid work teams are great examples of this kind of transition.
